Dumbarton Castle, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Strathclyde, is one of the foremost sites of historic interest in Scotland.

This is due to the origins of the castle, which is a volcanic plug. The number of historic events which have taken place at and around the castle, together with the rich cast of historic figures who have been associated with it, make it one of Scotland's most compelling historic sites.
